When Michelle Tillman was referred to Red Basket, she was skeptical about reaching a $10,000 fundraising goal, but she knew she had to do something to help her five-year-old daughter, Kaycee. Just about one year ago, shortly after Thanksgiving 2014, Kaycee began having seizures. They started with absence seizures and progressed so much that in March 2015, Kaycee had a full convulsive tonic clonic seizure that was not stopping on its own. Medication brought a bit of relief to Kaycee, but Michelle wanted more for her vibrant daughter who she describes as “a perfect example of sugar and spice all rolled into one.”

That’s when Michelle turned to Red Basket in hopes of raising $10,000 to purchase a trained seizure response service dog for Kaycee. The fundraiser for “Kaycee’s Sidekick” launched on August 28, 2015, and the first donation came from Red Basket’s Good Start Fund, which is fully funded by Red Basket donors. This $50 donation helped kick start Kaycee’s fundraiser and supporters followed suit, rallying to raise over $5,500 in all. With this money, Michelle was able to put down a deposit on the service dog that will be trained to assist Kaycee. After a lot of growing and learning, Sven will be ready to join the Tillman household in mid to late 2017!

When looking back at Kaycee’s Red Basket campaign, Michelle sees that the benefits ran far beyond the monetary donations they received. “Sometimes it seems most of what we see in our lives is bad or at least not extraordinarily good,” said Michelle. “I can say with certainty this project has enabled me to see the ‘good’. Thank you – I’ll never be able to say that enough.”

As we approach #GivingTuesday on Dec. 1, your support of Red Basket’s Good Start Program will allow us to continue to give each newly published campaign on Red Basket an initial $50 donation to help kick start fundraising efforts. You can see from Kaycee’s story just how important your donation is. Click here to make your tax deductible donation to Red Basket’s Good Start Fund. As always, every penny donated will be given to an individual or community project in need with no fees being charged to you. Thank you for your support!
