When little Vada Brundidge of Crescent, IA was born four weeks prematurely in November 2014, she had already overcome a few medical obstacles. Vada’s parents were surprised by her early arrival, and they would shortly learn of another surprise.

During her routine newborn screening, it was found that Vada did not have enough T-cells, the cells that fight infection. She was diagnosed with Severe Combined Immunodeficiency Disease (SCID). Vada’s journey with SCID means living with a compromised immune system. When a healthy child could simply fight off a cold or fever, these ailments often mean a trip to the hospital for Vada.

As Vada’s mom, Jayme, recalls Thanksgiving last year, it’s a vivid memory just how hard it was having a very sick newborn facing lots of unanswered questions. “I was home and had a baby in the NICU. Trying to keep life as normal as possible wasn’t the easiest thing to do,” said Jayme. “This year, I am more thankful that Vada is home with her family and we will be able to enjoy the holiday together.” Vada will celebrate her first birthday and will even get to have her first bite of mashed potatoes!

Another thing that Jayme is forever grateful for is the help she received from many Red Basket donors. Vada’s fundraising campaign was kicked off with a $50 donation from Red Basket’s Good Start fund. Friends and family followed suit to raise over $6,000 to help pay for medical bills and living expenses. “The help received through Red Basket took a giant portion of medical bills off our plates, and the feeling of having those bills paid was amazing,” said Jayme. “We could focus more on Vada and getting her healthy as well as the other kids.”
