#TipTuesday – Find a Strong Advocate

Asking for help can be difficult. That’s why it’s a good idea to get someone in your corner that can speak up for you. In the RedBasket.org world, we like to call this person your advocate.

Having a strong advocate can make all the difference when it comes to meeting your fundraising goal. A strong advocate is someone that you know personally, who knows your situation and who isn’t afraid to speak up and spread the word about your RedBasket.org fundraising campaign. Your advocate should know where your networks are and how to get in touch with them. Your advocate can also help you by responding to encouragements and questions on your RedBasket.org page and by posting project updates on your page for you.

Some of our most successful RedBasket.org fundraising campaigns have had strong advocates. For example, twenty-two year old Nate Bird from Moving Forward was in a motorcycle accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. When Nate was down and out, his girlfriend’s mother, Debbie, stepped up. She acted as Nate’s advocate for his RedBasket.org fundraising campaign by spreading the word about his fundraiser everywhere she went. She was familiar with Nate’s networks and tapped into those to gain support for him. She also kept supporters informed by posting project updates on Nate’s page.

Debbie offers this advice to people starting out. “What they need to do is immediately brainstorm ahead of time how they are going to tap into their resources for donations,” she said. “You don’t know what is out there until you start putting out that word. It’s when you least expect it, you will find a resource.” She also reminds donors to look into their employer match. In the end, Nate raised $12,100 reaching 121% of his goal and he was able to purchase a car that he could make handicapped accessible.

So…think of someone (or even better a couple of people) in your life that would be willing to be your own personal cheerleader and put them to work as your RedBasket.org advocate!
